In this short but brilliant novel, a small innocent family, is beset by evil forces. The family consists of the father Kino (a pearl diver), his wife Juana, and their baby Coyotito. In answer to his prayers, Kino dives and discovers an aged giant oyster which contains 'the pearl of the world'. With the wealth which this pearl represents, the family becomes a target of murderous greed and corruption.
The strength of this family, the family's power against evil, is found within it's ancestral origins. Steinbeck calls this, through the words and thoughts of the characters, 'the song of the family', which echoes and resonates in their souls.
Here is a page of this novel, which speaks of The Song of The Family. They have defeated the power of evil, but the power has killed their child. They are holding their dead child, and the pearl is in Kino's pocket...
