They resided in Nappan until about 1825, when they moved to Smith's Creek, Kings County, New Brunswick. They had a family of 14 children. (Coates, Dec 12 1981 issue)

From the Ripley Gazette...' Mathew was son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Henry) Coates. Elizabeth Henry was a daughter of Captain James and Ann Henry of Amherst, N.S. Ruth and Mathew were married by Colonel Purdy at Fort Lawrence on Nov 24, 1818. In March 1825 they moved to Smith's Creek, Kings County, N.B.." the spelling 'Mathew' is from the Gazette.
